I try to be a grateful person. I try to appreciate all of the things I have and the things that people do. I try to put my problems into perspective and think about the big picture.
But things slip through the cracks, you know?
I think it’s human nature. And I also think it’s my nature to get a little overwhelmed, then slow down a bit to think about some of those things that slip through the cracks.
Like how much we rely on other people – specifically the government – to ensure we’re safe. The food we eat and the air we breathe. The toys our children will be getting at Christmas and so, so, SO much more.
Unfortunately, there is legislation that is moving through Congress that could gut the federal safety protections we rely on.
Standards for healthier, safer food? Gone.
Product safety standards as we know it? No more.
Safeguards that maintain kids safety in, and on the way to, school? Nearly impossible to implement.
Consumer protection safety measures like a glow in the dark safety pull inside trunks in case you’re locked in a trunk? No longer a focus.
Specific safety standards for toys, baby products and furniture? Non-existent.
There are two pieces of legislation that are direct threats to all of this and more. The Regulatory Accountability Act and the REINS Act will essentially render agencies incapable of implementing AND enforcing commonsense safety laws that already have a great deal of public support.
The REINS Act would require Congressional approval of rules, effectively giving either branch of Congress, or powerful lobbying groups, a “pocket veto” on safeguards. The Regulatory Accountability Act (RAA) would create hurdles to rulemaking similar to the one that kept America from banning asbestos.
Super scary, right?
Luckily, there’s something ALL of us can do. It’s super easy, too. Even for the busiest of us – it truly only takes less than a minute. I did it myself to prove it and I think it technically took me a whopping 39 seconds.
Take action against the RAA & REINS Act by emailing your members of Congress via the click-to-email tool on cleanairmomsaction.org.
It’s so simple. But it matters. Your voice, our kids, and our future matters.
Please take a moment to let your members of Congress know that this isn’t okay. And share this with everyone you know. Because this will affect everyone in some way, shape, or form.
